Letter, 11/6: Hilgers Best Candidate For Job

I am writing to support my friend Mike Hilgers for Legislature in District 21. I have known Mike and his wife Heather for more than five years. They have been leaders in our community, being involved in their parish, in nonprofit organizations and volunteering their time to help others. Mike Hilgers and his family truly have a passion for their community and I have no doubt that Mike will bring his passion for the community to the Legislature. In the coming years, the Legislature is going to face a multitude of tough decisions, from budget issues to improving our struggling corrections system. We need people like Mike in the Legislature who have the capacity to take on tough issues, offer innovative solutions and have the compassion to move our state positively in the future. Mike is the best candidate for the job in District 21!

Letter, 11/6: Hilgers A Leader For The Future

This year will be the first year I am able to vote as I am an 18-year-old high school student. For the past year, I have been following politics closer than ever.
My father always talks about how impressed he is about Mike Hilgers, as he truly feels he takes the time to build relationships with the community. One afternoon, Mike was walking in my neighborhood and stopped at our door and my dad asked me to talk with him. I was impressed with how humble he was and that he took the time to talk to me about issues that I was interested in. Being a high school student, education affects me every day and Mike understood that. He explained how we must continue our strong academic achievement. I was also impressed with his ability to build a successful business here in Lincoln, but I am most impressed about his ability to take the time to listen to me.

As I am planning on continuing my education and aspiring to go to law school, I want to ensure that we have leaders who can help the next generations. Mike Hilgers is a leader we need. He knows how to navigate the 21st century economy and he can help ease the tax and debt burdens for Nebraskans. Hilgers also has a good record of creating jobs and bringing economic growth to North Lincoln.

I am proudly voting for Mike Hilgers and I hope you do too!

Letter, 11/4: Hilgers Understands Business Needs

As a small business owner, one of my biggest concerns is the legislature being out of touch with the plight of the small business owner. We don’t have a strong voice in state politics as other groups do. I’m voting for Mike Hilgers because I feel he’ll be someone to give us that voice.

I’ve gotten to know Mike personally over the last several years and I know that he is committed to the concerns of the small business owner because he is one. Mike has run a business in Lincoln for 6 years, growing it, worrying about it and making it thrive. He understands how to balance a budget, make a payroll and create jobs because he's actually done it.

I will be voting for Mike Hilgers on Nov. 8 because I know he understands how the laws he'll be creating impact small business owners like myself. I strongly encourage you to vote for him as well.

Letter, 11/3: Hilgers Excellent Choice

I graduated from UNL’s law school in 2013. I met Mike Hilgers shortly after passing the bar exam. He managed a small law firm in Lincoln and offered me part-time work until I landed somewhere. I’ve watched his firm expand due to his leadership and work ethic, both of which I’m confident will carry over into the Legislature.

As a business owner, Mike intimately understands that excessive taxes and complex regulatory schemes are burdensome for business owners, impeding job creation and economic growth. I work with Nebraska-based high-tech startups, and I believe Mike possesses the vision and understanding of high-growth startups that will keep Nebraska competitive, both nationally and internationally.

I generally agree with Mike’s political views, but I’m more impressed by the way he lives. He’s a man of character. I’ve seen him on bended knee at church multiple times. He’s built a beautiful family with his wife and three daughters. They radiate joy into our world that so often lacks hope. Mike is intelligent, driven and has the character necessary to ensure Nebraska remains the best place to live in the United States. Mike would be an excellent choice for the voters of Legislative District 21.

Farm Bureau PAC Names Only One Friend Of Agriculture In District 21 Race: Mike Hilgers

The Nebraska Farm Bureau PAC has only one candidate it has named in the 2016 general election in District 21: Mike Hilgers.

“Mike Hilgers shares many of the core values of the Nebraska Farm Bureau and its members and we are pleased to include him among those receiving our ‘Friend of Agriculture endorsement,” said Mark McHargue of Central City, chairman of NFBF-PAC and first vice president of Nebraska Farm Bureau.

According to McHargue, Hilgers would bring a wide array of experiences to the Nebraska Legislature, including experience as a small business owner. “Because of that experience Mike has much in common with Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers and we believe he can effectively reflect those interests in the legislature,” said McHargue.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Farm Bureau," Mike Hilgers said.  "The foundation of Nebraska's culture of hard work, humility, and integrity comes from Nebraska farmers and farm communities.  In a time of low commodity prices, they need now more than ever a strong fighter in the Legislature--Nebraska farmers know that I will stand and fight with Nebraska Ag producers to protect their way of life and protect their industry."

Farm Bureau’s ‘Friend of Agriculture’ designation is given to selected candidates for public office based on their commitment to and positions on agricultural issues, qualifications, previous experience, communication abilities and their ability to represent the district.

Mike Hilgers Touts Entrepreneurship Experience

As reported in the Lincoln Journal Star, the CEO of Gallup, Jim Clifton, spoke in Lincoln yesterday about the critical importance of entrepreneurship to our state's future.

Mike Hilgers touted his own unique experience in starting and growing a business:  "I could not agree more with Mr. Clifton -- job growth and innovation come from our small businesses and from the men and women who take risk to start new companies."  Hilgers continued, "I know first-hand the challenges and opportunities of being an entrepreneur because I am one. Heather and I took a risk to start our company over 5 years ago; we started small but we have grown to over a dozen employees.

"There is a a critical need for that kind of real-world experience in the unicameral -- if elected I will fight for entrepreneurs in the legislature."

Letter, 5/8: Hilgers Obvious Choice

Lincoln is expanding and, with that, we need leaders who can facilitate this growth within our businesses, families, and the community as a whole. In considering the future Nebraskans want for Lincoln and for the state, Mike Hilgers becomes the obvious choice for legislature in District 21. Mike is a native Nebraskan who returned home to Lincoln to raise his two daughters with his wife Heather. His personal experience living the good life and his love of our great state will help him to create legislation that positions Nebraska as a destination for the best and brightest minds in the country. Mike has personal experience creating jobs in Nebraska through his intellectual property law firm and is ready to take a more direct approach to opening doors for all Nebraskans by joining the legislature.

Letter, 5/8: Support for Hilgers

I first met Mike Hilgers when he knocked on my door five years ago. He was running for State Legislature in District 21. Ours was one of the first doors he knocked on. We talked for a few minutes, he gave me some literature and said I could call or email him any time.

So I did. I sent an email asking his position on some issue and the strangest thing happened. He invited me to lunch to talk about it.Since then, we have kept in touch. We've gone to their kids birthday parties and they've come to ours. We see them at the Fallbrook farmers market and have hung out on the Fourth of July. They are our neighbors, even though our neighborhoods are different. Now we have another similarity. My wife and I have had boy/girl twins for five years and they'll have boy/girl twins in four months!

Mike and I don't agree on everything but we agree on a lot. I talked to him this morning and asked how he would have voted on LB1106, the civil forfeiture bill ("Plenty to like from civil forfeiture reform," April 17). He said it was long overdue. We agree that smaller government is better and high taxes in Nebraska are a problem. When we don't agree, he doesn't tell me what I want to hear; he listens and we talk about it.

I've seen Mike work on his campaigns, I've seen his business in Lincoln grow, and soon he is going to have four kids! We have four kids. It's a lot of work but Mike and Heather are some of the hardest working people I know so I'm not worried.

So, on May 10th, we are voting for Mike Hilgers. I hope you do too.

Lt. Governor Mike Foley Calls out Dishonest Political Attacks on Mike Hilgers

Lincoln, Neb. – Today Lieutenant Governor Mike Foley expressed disappointment about the dishonest personal attacks against his friend Mike Hilgers who is running for the legislature.

“It is disappointing to see the dishonest personal attacks against Mike Hilgers, who is a man of character seeking to make Nebraska a better place. The ridiculous attack by a special interest group based in New York City suggests Mike Hilgers isn't a Nebraskan because he didn't attend college here. The truth is that Mike was born and raised in Nebraska, and brought his wife back to raise their young family and be part of our wonderful community,” said Foley.
“Lincoln voters deserve better than dishonest character attacks,” said Foley. Mike Hilgers has earned the support of

Governor Pete Ricketts, Lt. Governor Mike Foley, Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, Lincoln City Councilmen Roy Christensen and Cyndi Lamm, Former Governor Dave Heinemann and Former State Senator Carol Hudkins, among others.
